2 April 2026:

The submit deadline of your term paper is 10:00am, 10 April 2026.
You can choose one of the following two ways to submit:

• You can submit a hard copy of your term paper before the due date/time;
• Login to your VIU Learn account, find the CSCI 479 course page, click on the "Assessment" drop-down menu, click on the "Assignments" item, then click on the folder named "Project". Then you can click on the "Add a File" button to browse and upload your term paper.

Because of the nature of the project this term, there doesn't seem to have diversified background/domain knowledge associated with your term paper. Therefore, a presentation for your term paper is optional. If you feel that an extra presentation can help to supplement your term paper, come to do a 15 minute presentation during your lab time on April 9th.

20 March 2026:

Assignment 5 has been posted.
The submit deadline of Assignment 4 is 10am, 3 April 2026, Friday.

5 March 2026:

Lab 6 and Assignment 4 have been posted.
Lab 6 and Assignment 4 are only related because they are both using error based learning to tune a predictive model. You only need to submit deliverables of Assignment 4.
The submit deadline of Assignment 4 is 10am, 20 March 2026, Friday.

11 February 2026:

Lab 5 has been posted. There is no associated assignments.

5 February 2026:

Lab 4 and Assignment 3 have been posted. The task described in Lab 4 is useful for the tasks described in Assignment 3. You only need to submit deliverables for Assignment 3.
The submit deadline of Assignment 3 is 10am, 6 March 2026, Friday.
VIU Learn will only accept your Assignment 3 submission starting from noon, 13 February 2026, Friday.

29 January 2026:

Lab 3 and Assignment 2 have been posted. The tasks described in Lab 3 are parts of a bigger task described in Assignment 2. You only need to submit deliverables for Assignment 2. The submit deadline of Assignment 2 is 10am, 13 February 2026, Friday.

15 January 2026:

Lab 1, Lab 2 and Assignment 1 have been posted. All three are somewhat related, but you only need to submit deliverables for Assignment 1. The submit deadline of Assignment 1 is 10am, 30 January 2026, Friday.

Welcome to CSCI 479, Artificial Intelligence focus on Machine Learning.

Our first lecture starts at 8:30, Tuesday, 6 January 2026. The first lab will be held on 14:30 - 16:30, Thursday, 15 January 2026 for Section S26N01.

If, for any reason, you can not attend the first lecture session, please notify your instructor (Email: Huizhu.Liu@viu.ca) ASAP. Otherwise, you run the risk of being de-registered from the class due to VIU's no-show policy.
